Architectural Design
Entry perspective illustrating raised villa access and shading at the Mentawai surf resort
Design Approach and Ethos
Nestled on the rugged coastline of the Mentawai Islands, this surf-resort and residences concept seamlessly fuses raw natural beauty with refined architectural purpose.
Our approach begins with the ocean’s rhythm and reef-topography: structures are sited to frame surf breaks, capture breezes and preserve indigenous vegetation.
Modular villa clusters cascade toward the shore, harmonising with the terrain while offering waterfront hierarchy and private retreat. Materials draw from local timber, insitu concrete and weathered metal, reflecting the surf culture’s realism and elemental exposure.
Indoor-outdoor living is emphasised—deep overhangs, shaded patios and expansive glazing open onto surf decks that allow access to the beach.
Sustainability is embedded throughout: passive ventilation, minimal site disturbance and community-scale social spaces ensure the resort is both respectful of place and designed to enhance the experience of waves, land and life.
